Subsidy Amount under Solar Panel Government Scheme in India
During the announcement of the interim budget 2024, our Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman announced this scheme named PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. This scheme enables you to buy government-subsidised solar panels to reduce your panel set-up cost.
To provide financial assistance, the government has decided to give up to Rs.78,000 of subsidy. The union cabinet approved a budget of over Rs.75,000 crore to run this scheme.
Solar Subsidy Amount in India
Solar installation subsidy is not a new thing in India. Earlier, under the PM Rooftop Solar Scheme, beneficiaries used to get Rs.14,000/KW for up to the first 3 KW and Rs.7,000 for every subsequent KW after 3KW. Then this solar installation subsidy amount was increased to Rs.18,000 for up to the first 3 KW and Rs.7,000 for every subsequent KW after 3KW.
At present, the subsidy scheme is revised with a new name and new rooftop solar subsidy amount, as listed in the table below:
Rooftop Solar Capacity (KW) | Solar Subsidy Amount (Rs.) |
1 KW | Rs.30,000 |
2 KW | Rs.60,000 (Rs.30,000 + Rs.30,000) |
3 KW or above | Rs.78,000 (Rs.30,000 + Rs.30,000 + Rs.18,000) |
Eligibility Criteria for Solar Panel Installation Subsidy in India
You will be eligible for government subsidies for solar panels in domestic homes if you meet the following criteria:
Customer Type
In India, the government subsidy for solar panels only applies to residential customers who use solar electricity only for domestic purposes. There are no subsidies for commercial and industrial customers.
DISCOM’s Registration
Only the customers of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy or MNRE-registered DISCOMs can apply for this subsidy. You can check the list of state-wise registered DISCOMs on the government portal of rooftop solar subsidy.
Installer’s Registration
A solar installer’s registration with the MNRE-approved DISCOMs is also mandatory. If your solar installer is not registered with your DISCOM, you are not eligible to claim a subsidy.
To help you find the list of DISCOM-registered solar installers list, we have discussed the process in this blog below.
In addition, you must ask your solar installer to install the top quality, latest and advanced solar panels on your rooftop. To get it, you must choose solar panels from top solar companies in India.
Solar Module Type
As per MNRE, to get a subsidy under the solar panels scheme your solar modules must fall under the DCR category. DCR module means both the solar cell and solar module are made in India.
If you install a non-DCR module, you will not get a subsidy under this scheme. To check this, the DISCOM executives visit your home before the subsidy disbursement. In addition, the solar panel also has to be listed on the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).
Solar Power Plant Type
You must choose an on-grid solar plant to get a solar panel installation subsidy in India. An off-grid solar panel is not connected to power grids, therefore, the subsidy does not apply to this system.
Other Requirements
You have to follow all other requirements as per the government regulations such as:
i)The applicant must be an Indian resident with valid documents
ii)The applicant, house owner, and electric meter owner should be the same owner.
Besides meeting all the solar subsidy eligibility requirements, you should ideally buy the best solar panels in India to ensure value for money from your long-term investment in the solar power system.
