EV market in India continued its rapid expansion during the first half of 2026. Electric vehicle sales rose 43% year-on-year to 1,541,377 units between January and June. According to JMK Research, EV penetration increased to 11.43%. It is up from 8% during the same period last year. This reflects stronger consumer demand and improving market maturity.

Electric two-wheelers remained the largest contributor to overall EV sales. This is supported by strong demand in urban and semi-urban markets. Affordable pricing, lower running costs and improved battery technology are continuously making the segment the primary growth driver for the EV in Indian market.

Electric three-wheelers also maintained healthy growth, especially in commercial passenger (73.95%) and cargo segments (60.66%). Commercial vehicles (including buses and trucks) recorded rising adoption as fleet operators increasingly focused on reducing operating costs and meeting sustainability targets.

The report also indicates that India’s EV ecosystem is becoming diversified. While two-wheelers continue to dominate volumes, higher adoption in passenger cars, buses, commercial vehicles, etc suggests that electrification is expanding across the broader electric vehicle industry in India.

JMK Research noted that the EV market in India has entered a new phase where growth is supported by multiple vehicle segments rather than a single category. This diversification is expected to strengthen long-term market resilience as charging networks, battery, manufacturing investments and more continue to expand.

India is steadily moving towards mainstream electric mobility with EV penetration already crossing 11.43% in the first six months of the year. If current trends continue, 2026 could become another record year for the country’s electric vehicle sector.
