EV sales in India recorded another major milestone as retail electric vehicle registrations jumped by more than 40% year-on-year. It highlights how increasing fuel prices, improving charging infrastructure and a wider range of electric models are reshaping consumer buying decisions.

The growth reflects a structural shift in India’s electric vehicle sales, with EVs accounting for more than 11% of all vehicle retail sales for the first time. Industry experts say higher petrol and diesel prices have strengthened the economic case for electric mobility, encouraging buyers to switch to lower running-cost alternatives.

According to FADA, total EV retail sales reached 2,71,682 units in May 2026, marking a 45% year-on-year increase. Electric passenger vehicle registrations surged by 81.2% to 26,682 units. On the other hand, electric two-wheeler sales climbed nearly 63% to 1,70,733 units.

Tata Motors retained its leadership in the passenger EV segment, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW MG Motor India. In the two-wheeler category, TVS Motor led the market ahead of Bajaj Auto and Ather Energy.

FADA President C.S. Vigneshwar said, “For the first time ever, EVs crossed 11% of all vehicles retailed.” He added that recent fuel price increases have made the economics of electric mobility more compelling for consumers. Also, localisation, expanding charging infrastructure and greater model availability are supporting sustained growth.

Fuel Prices and Policy Support Strengthen India EV Sales

The recent rise in global crude oil prices has increased interest in alternative fuel vehicles across India. Market data shows consumers are increasingly prioritising lower operating costs. This results in stronger demand for electric, hybrid and CNG vehicles. Alternative fuel vehicles have also captured a record share of India’s passenger vehicle market in recent months.

Despite the strong momentum, industry stakeholders believe further expansion of public charging infrastructure, easier financing and stable policy support will be essential to sustain long-term growth. Even so, the latest figures indicate that India EV sales are entering a new phase of mainstream adoption.
