India’s Solar and wind energy sector continued its rapid expansion during the first half of 2026, with combined installed solar and wind capacity reaching approximately 219 GW by 30 June 2026. The milestone highlights the growing dominance of these two technologies, which now account for nearly 92.8% of India’s renewable energy capacity excluding large hydro, reinforcing the country’s progress towards its 2030 clean energy targets.
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s cumulative renewable energy capacity stood at 288.58 GW as of 30 June 2026. Solar remained the largest contributor with 162.15 GW, followed by 57.44 GW of wind power, 57.24 GW of large hydro, and 11.75 GW of bio power. Together, solar and wind represent the backbone of India’s evolving Renewable Energy Mix.
The first six months of 2026 also witnessed record project additions. Data from JMK Research shows India installed around 26 GW of new solar capacity and 2.9 GW of new wind capacity between January and June. Solar additions increased by 43% year on year, while wind installations declined by around 16% compared with the same period in 2025.
Utility-scale projects remained the biggest growth driver, contributing nearly 19 GW of new solar installations. Rooftop solar recorded the fastest growth, with approximately 6.4 GW added during H1 2026, more than doubling year on year due to the continued rollout of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The off-grid segment added another 842.9 MW during the period, strengthening overall solar capacity in India.
State-wise deployment continued to remain concentrated in a few leading renewable energy hubs. Gujarat led new solar installations with 7.6 GW, followed by Rajasthan at 6.6 GW and Tamil Nadu at 2.4 GW. In the Wind Power India segment, Gujarat also ranked first with around 1.2 GW of new capacity additions, ahead of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
On cumulative capacity, Gujarat remained India’s largest combined solar and wind state with over 49.3 GW, narrowly ahead of Rajasthan at 48.8 GW. Rajasthan retained its position as the country’s largest solar power producer with more than 43 GW of installed solar capacity.
Looking ahead, JMK Research estimates India could add nearly 47 GW of new solar and wind capacity during calendar year 2026. If achieved, the pace would further strengthen the country’s Green Energy Statistics and support its goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity by 2030.
