Andhra Pradesh has taken another major step towards strengthening India’s domestic solar supply chain after Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for the ReNew energy solar plant at Rambilli in Anakapalli district. The 6.5 GW solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility is expected to reinforce India’s clean energy manufacturing ecosystem. It will also reduce dependence on imported upstream solar components.
The project will be developed by ReNew Energy Global with an investment of approximately Rs 4,200 crore for the manufacturing facility. Including a dedicated captive power plant, the total investment is estimated at around Rs 5,400 crore.
The new plant will manufacture solar ingots and wafers. These are two critical upstream components used in photovoltaic module production. The facility will also support backward integration of ReNew’s existing solar cell and module manufacturing operations.
The project is among India’s first large-scale greenfield ingot and wafer manufacturing facilities. It aligns with the country’s push to expand domestic manufacturing under evolving policy measures. It includes the extension of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) framework to cover wafers and ingots from June 2028.
Construction is expected to be completed within around 24 months. Once the facility is operational, it is expected to generate more than 2,100 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Speaking at the foundation ceremony, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said the project would strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s rapidly expanding renewable energy manufacturing ecosystem.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that Andhra Pradesh aims to develop 160 GW of green energy generation capacity in the coming years. According to him, the state has already attracted renewable energy investment proposals worth nearly Rs 5.95 lakh crore. Also, around 90 GW of projects are under various stages of development.
ReNew Founder, Chairman and CEO Mr. Sumant Sinha said the facility would play an important role in building India’s energy security.
“The facility will advance India’s clean energy transition by localising the solar supply chain, reducing import dependence, and bolstering energy self-reliance,” Sinha said in the company’s official statement.
The renewable energy company has also confirmed that the project forms part of its broader Rs 82,000 crore investment commitment. That being said, the Rambilli facility represents another significant green energy investment that aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity and support India’s renewable energy targets.
