India has extended the BIS certification timeline for high-capacity solar inverter models, giving manufacturers another 6 months to meet mandatory certification requirements. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has postponed the deadline for solar photovoltaic (SPV) inverters above 200 kW from 30 June to 31 December 2026.
The decision addresses a key challenge facing the industry: the limited availability of accredited testing facilities capable of certifying large-capacity inverters. Under the revised notification issued on 3 July 2026, manufacturers can continue to supply eligible products through self-certification, provided they comply with the prescribed technical standards and hold valid supporting documentation.
The notification applies to Items 4 and 5 under the Solar Systems, Devices and Components Goods Order, 2025. While the mandatory BIS certification for solar inverters in India has not been removed, manufacturers of SPV inverters exceeding 200 kW may continue operating under a temporary self-certification framework until 31 December 2026 or until further government orders.
According to the official MNRE notification signed by Rajesh Kulhari, Joint Secretary, the extension has been granted “in view of the availability of limited test facilities and providing more time for compliance.”
To qualify, manufacturers must possess valid IEC certificates corresponding to the applicable Indian Standards and obtain test reports from accredited laboratories. The extension therefore relaxes only the registration timeline and does not dilute product safety, quality or performance requirements.
The solar inverter BIS extension is expected to reduce procurement risks for developers constructing utility-scale solar parks and large commercial and industrial (C&I) projects. Without the additional compliance window, many projects could have faced delays due to limited availability of BIS-certified high-capacity inverters.
Industry participants also gain additional time to complete laboratory testing, prepare technical documentation and submit BIS applications while maintaining equipment supply for ongoing projects.
The move aligns with broader India solar inverter regulations, which aim to improve product quality while supporting rapid renewable energy deployment. High-capacity inverters remain essential components for India’s expanding solar generation capacity and ambitious clean energy targets.
Although manufacturers may continue supplying products through self-certification, the extension is temporary. Companies are expected to complete large solar inverter certification before the revised deadline to avoid future compliance risks.
The updated BIS certification deadline for solar inverters provides manufacturers, EPC contractors and testing laboratories additional time to strengthen compliance processes while expanding testing capacity. Businesses planning new utility-scale projects are expected to use this period to complete certification well before full enforcement begins.
